Ace of Pentacles (Rings)
One of the most prominent tools Sonic and his friends utilize, rings represent new opportunities. In the base sense of the word, these Ace of Pentacles can be used as currency to purchase items—such as those in the Chao Black Market—or otherwise overcome obstacles like the safe found at Casinopolis. Their most useful trait, however, is offering security: as long as someone has at least one ring, they cannot lose a life.
Naturally, a lack of rings and their boons represent the Ace of Pentacles reversed. The Chaotix are always scrounging up ways to make ends meet, leading to Vector (and Charmy) to be quite obsessive with their poor finances. Additionally, any sort of damage sends rings careening away, and having a scarcity of backups may spell certain doom.
The Ace of Pentacles are abundant in many senses and being without is definitely not valuable.
Upright Keywords: abundance, new opportunities, prosperity, security
Reversed Keywords: poor finances, penny-pinching, scarcity, bad outcomes
Two of Pentacles (Extreme Gear)
As the Two of Pentacles, Extreme Gear are high-speed vehicles designed to defy gravity. Highly adaptable in shape and power, an Extreme Gear racer must use their resourcefulness to manage not only the movements of other racers, but of themselves as well. Races like the World Grand Prix offer particularly skilled racers to win cash prizes, though certain events have not always turned out how they were intended.
The consequences of lacking skill in Extreme Gear racing is most visible when the Two of Pentacles is reversed. The four main attributes an Extreme Gear can have—Dash, Limit, Power, and Cornering—are found in different levels on different vehicles, and not optimizing for the chosen course could very well end in disaster. Additionally, racers lacking in morals may throw the very balance of an Extreme Gear race into question, such as when Wave detonated a bomb she planted on Sonic’s board.
The Two of Pentacles are a master class in balancing strategy and sportsmanship both.
Upright Keywords: adaptability, resourcefulness, strategy, finances
Reversed Keywords: lack of skill, poor optimization, imbalance, wrong priorities
Three of Pentacles (Tornado)
Sonic’s airplane, the Tornado, is at the center of his and Tails’ synergy. In its role as the Three of Pentacles, a Tails-piloted Tornado has saved Sonic and his friends more than once, such as following the initial destruction of the Death Egg; their mutual survival at the end of each adventure celebrates a job well done. Additionally, the Tornado has occasionally gotten new upgrades implemented into it—such as a mechanical tether for the Master Emerald—as Sonic and Tails sees fit.
When the Three of Pentacles is reversed, however, malfunctions appear. The Tornado is not immune to misalignment or destruction, with the significant damage occurring during the Egg Carrier incident requiring a complete rebuild. Occasionally, either Tails or Sonic operates the Tornado alone: Tails can be spotted during the Little Planet incident, but is too distracted flying to assist Sonic in that day's adventure.
The Three of Pentacles' teamwork makes the dream work, but kinks in its system might hinder that from happening.
Upright Keywords: teamwork, synergy, celebration, implementation
Reversed Keywords: malfunction, misalignment, termination, solo missions
Four of Pentacles (Death Egg)
An ultimate flying fortress born from Eggman, the Death Egg displays its master’s greed in excess as the Four of Pentacles. Built for the purpose of conquering the planet, it is an extremely well-oiled machine that is the figurehead of Eggman’s control. This colossus did not come cheaply, however: Eggman enslaved countless animals to aid in its creation, corrupting nature in favor of materialism.
The saga of the Death Egg does not last forever, as in the Four of Pentacles reversed. Shot down during the West Side Island incident, Eggman takes several risky maneuvers to restore it, including stealing the Master Emerald from Angel Island. Ultimately, the Death Egg is completely destroyed through the efforts of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, all while freeing those indentured to Eggman.
The Four of Pentacles is power and security personified, but keeping a grip on said control is no easy task.
Upright Keywords: greed, control, hoarding, materialism
Reversed Keywords: out with the old, instability, risk, theft
Five of Pentacles (Eclipse Cannon)
The doomsday device lurking on the Space Colony ARK, the Eclipse Cannon’s ruin embodies the Five of Pentacles. Originally created to fend off the Black Arms, it became one of the few legacies left from Gerald’s fall from grace, with its targets instead set on devastating the Earth. As such, the Eclipse Canon—and all of Project SHADOW—became a scandalous secret for the United Federation and G.U.N., intended to be locked away for good.
Despite the dangers of the Eclipse Cannon, the Five of Pentacles reversed results in some positive outcomes for its eventual reveal. Eggman’s plot to take over the world results in Shadow regaining consciousness, embittered and haunted by his own mind. However, learning the truth of his friend Maria’s final words—triggered only through the interactions with Sonic, Amy, and their other friends due to the threat—changed Shadow for the better, allowing him to let go of his vengeance and work on protecting the Earth instead.
The Five of Pentacles destroys all it touches, but what remains in the aftermath may still kindle positive growth.
Upright Keywords: ruin, hardship, alienation, scandal
Reversed Keywords: positive change, recovery, forgiveness, letting go
Six of Pentacles (Item Box)
Scattered across the world, Item Boxes present those who break them with gifts. As the Six of Pentacles, they share their powers—ranging from invincibility, speed, and even extra lives—with Sonic and friends when they most need support. With these powerups, certain obstacles like spike pits become less threatening during the traversal of zones.
Not all Item Box gifts are a blessing, such as those found in the Six of Pentacles reversed. Powerups like the Eggman Mark are not as generous as they seem, causing damage to those that take them instead of helping. Additionally, certain Item Boxes during competitive games between Sonic and his friends, like the Fireball, directly hinder rivals to allow the user victory.
The Six of Pentacles is generous indeed, but their gifts may not be what you want or seek.
Upright Keywords: generosity, abundance, sharing, gifts
Reversed Keywords: abuse of power, with strings attached, malice, inequality
Seven of Pentacles (Chaos Emeralds)
An ancient array of gemstones from beyond the stars and the Seven of Pentacles, the Chaos Emeralds usually appear at the culmination of Sonic’s adventures. Embodying the ideals of those who possess them, having all seven is needed to enter and sustain a Super State, such as Super Sonic. However, the Chaos Emeralds almost always scatter once the given mission is complete, retiring until ready to be discovered again.
As often as they’re harnessed for good, the Seven of Pentacles reversed showcases when the Chaos Emeralds are used for sinister purposes. Eggman needed all seven to make the Perfect Chaos, but his lack of foresight resulted in Chaos rampaging out of control. Additionally, potential futures for Shadow see him losing focus on his true identity and weaponizing the Chaos Emeralds to conquer Earth, space, or somewhere in between.
The Seven of Pentacles cultivates perseverance beyond measure, but using their power in frustration is ill advised.
Upright Keywords: culmination, perseverance, manifestation, nearing conclusion
Reversed Keywords: lack of foresight, poor planning, lost focus, regression
Eight of Pentacles (Piko Piko Hammer)
Amy’s weapon of choice, the Piko Piko Hammer is a fierce opponent in the right hands. Great mastery of skill represents the Eight of Pentacles, and Amy has done everything with the Piko Piko Hammer, from flinging herself into the air in a frontflip to denting the cabin of the Mirage Express. The Piko Piko Hammer rewards Amy with a level of confidence that allows her to stand toe-to-toe with her more overtly supernatural friends.
This confidence can quickly turn into brashness when the Eight of Pentacles is reversed. Amy has been known to raise her hammer in anger against her friends for perceived carelessness, such as when Sonic missed his “date” with her during the Black Knight incident. Additionally, not every Piko Piko Hammer is built equally: her hammer during the Chaos incident needed to be upgraded to be stronger and perform her spin attacks, while the backup one during her birthday party initially broke after one swing.
The Eight of Pentacles has both high craftsmanship and a skill barrier, but needs to be used with a level head.
Upright Keywords: high reputation, mastery, bringing results, success
Reversed Keywords: brashness, aggressiveness, poor results, overestimation of skill
Nine of Pentacles (Chili Dog)
A fast food staple and the Nine of Pentacles, the humble chili dog nonetheless is a high ticket item for a certain blue hedgehog. Although rare in Sonic’s line of work, a good chili dog often acts as a reward, such as being gifted as a present at Sonic’s birthday party. While Sonic naturally keeps a fit figure for his adventures, the occasional indulgence granted by a chili dog can still be welcome.
Due to their place amongst Sonic’s favorites, chili dogs are sometimes a target of sabotage and theft when the Nine of Pentacles is reversed. Once summoned into the story of Camelot, Sonic was prevented by Merlina from finishing his dog to avoid the Black Knight’s wrath. And during the Dark Gaia incident, Eggman corrupted the holy sanctity of the chili dog to create the Eggdog, a revolting dish that repulses both Sonic and Chip.
The Nine of Pentacles is a luxury that has many eyes aiming for corruption upon it.
Upright Keywords: prosperity, rewards, indulgence, luxury
Reversed Keywords: sabotage, theft, corruption, scams
Ten of Pentacles (Badniks)
The Ten of Pentacles are the Badniks, the foot-soldiers of the Eggman Empire. Their endless numbers are evidence of Eggman’s seemingly-bottomless pockets: no matter how many Badniks are trashed by Sonic and friends, Eggman has the means and connections to bounce back tenfold. Certain Badniks, like E-102 Gamma, are afforded extra privileges compared to lower-ranking models—in Gamma’s case, elite status on the Egg Carrier.
Not every Badnik is content with the pecking order—or even included at all. Like the Ten of Pentacles reversed, Metal Sonic once aimed to collapse the Eggman Empire for his own cold-hearted purposes, intent on proving himself as the superior Sonic. On the other end of the spectrum, Belle’s position as a “good” Badnik made by Mr. Tinker gives her little regard in Eggman’s eyes, inherently isolating her from the rest of her kind, although she aims to eventually free all Badniks from the status quo.
The Ten of Pentacles’ existences result from excessive financial security, but those who don’t measure up face ostracization.
Upright Keywords: over-excessiveness, affluence, continued success, privilege
Reversed Keywords: ostracization, cold-heartedness, neglect, collapsing the status quo
Page of Pentacles (Egg Mobile)
Eggman is almost never seen without the dependable Egg Mobile, the Page of Pentacles. Seen with a multitude of upgrades and attachments, the Egg Mobile is highly versatile, capable of swinging around large bludgeoning spheres and turning into the mech-like Eggwalker. Furthermore, the Egg Mobile is foundational to many Eggman schemes, often used to steal valuables like the Chaos and Master Emeralds or quickly assault foes.
The Egg Mobile being involved in so many operations means the Page of Pentacles reversed brings some failures. While upgrades like the Egg Drillster—equipped on wheels and with spiked front—are threatening, they usually have easily exploitable flaws: in the Egg Drillster’s case, hitting the cockpit quickly takes it down. But Eggman is nothing if not resourceful, always bouncing back from lackluster upgrades and onto new—if also ill-advised—directions.
The Page of Pentacles takes advantage of new opportunities but often approaches them in foolish ways.
Upright Keywords: dependability, versatility, setting up foundations, ambition
Reversed Keywords: failure, poor design, foolishness, learning from mistakes
Knight of Pentacles (Miles Electric)
The Miles Electric is a device that grants Tails a multitude of practical functions. This Knight of Pentacles offers analytical results through its ambitious capabilities, being able to identify the properties of anything scanned, such as the Zetis comprising the Deadly Six. On a less flashy level, the Miles Electric can translate foreign or alien languages, which allows Sonic, Tails, and Yacker to collaborate on restoring Planet Wisp to its rightful state.
When presenting as the Knight of Pentacles reversed, the Miles Electric becomes more unreliable. Initially, its translations of the Wisp language are shoddy, requiring intensive fiddling to perfect the quirks. Furthermore, powerful readings make the Miles Electric unstable, with the intense energies emanating from Infinite completely crippling Tails’ ability to glean information.
The Knight of Pentacles is a productive device that nonetheless requires further discipline to work properly.
Upright Keywords: practicality, functionality, ambitiousness, hard work paying off
Reversed Keywords: unreliability, shoddiness, perfectionism, instability
Queen of Pentacles (Capsule)
Eggman-branded Capsules are key to their inventor’s prosperity. In their role as the Queen of Pentacles, they capture and secure animals or other small objects to be used by Eggman in his Badniks, the core of his financial and villainous goals. However, Capsules are also used to mark the end of zones for Sonic and friends, with their destruction marking success in freeing the trapped creatures within.
Of course, the Capsules’ role as glorified prisons is evident when the Queen of Pentacles is reversed. Only an arguable sociopath like Eggman would lock living beings inside cramped containers where movement is hardly possible. Additionally, there is a lack of safety measures installed on the Capsules: they can only open one way, meaning those trapped inside cannot escape in dangerous situations, such as that faced by Vanilla within the True Area 53 mech.
The Queen of Pentacles excel as tools of business but reflect the cruel possessiveness of their master.
Upright Keywords: prosperity, sensible business practices, growing finances, success
Reversed Keywords: exploitation, mean-spiritedness, abuse, impracticality
King of Pentacles (Master Emerald)
A powerful artifact guarded by Knuckles and his ancestors, the Master Emerald’s solidity represents the King of Pentacles. It acts as a stabilizing “leader” for the Chaos Emeralds, neutralizing or amplifying their power depending on the situation, seen when they halt the Space Colony ARK’s descent on Earth. The Master Emerald is also a provider for Angel Island, allowing it to float in the heavens and supporting the local ecosystems so the creatures living there thrive.
The Master Emerald is the target of power-hungry foes when the King of Pentacles is reversed. Eggman consistently yearns for its power, stealing it a number of times to use as an energy source for machines like the Giant Eggman Robo. The Master Emerald has even caused the undoing of grand empires: most of the Knuckles tribe was ruthlessly eliminated by Chaos following their attempt to steal it, requiring Tikal to seal Chaos and herself within the Emerald to restore balance.
The King of Pentacles is a grounding force for good, so long as greedy hands are kept away.
Upright Keywords: stability, supportiveness, good provider, dependability
Reversed Keywords: power-hungriness, greed, ruthlessness, hasty decisions
